Chapter Seventeen

Jenna awoke to throbbing pain in her hand and head and sat up with a groan. She could hear Rob on the phone with the insurance company, and he was sounding a little irritated.

“Yes, I am getting the police report today. No, I don’t have his registration. He died in the car accident so you can’t interview him.”

Jenna pushed off the bed and walked into the dining room, finding him sitting with his head in his hand. She made her way into the kitchen and pulled out a diet soda and an apple fritter from its box on the counter, then went back and sat across from Rob.

He hung up the phone with a sigh. “Damn insurance company.”

“What are we going to do?”

“Well, our insurance company is providing you with a rental car. They’re just going to have to go after Mr. Kinney’s company to get them to pay. That was who I was on the phone with.”

“Mr. Kinney needs to leave me alone.”

“He still harassing you?”

She shrugged. “It’s sort of a constant pull on my subconscious. It’s tiring.”

“I bet. Do you think he’ll move on?”

“I hope so. ‘Bout ready to get an exorcist.”

Rob chuckled and leaned back.

She frowned suddenly and said, “What time is it? Don’t you have work?”

“I canceled my appointments for today. I wanted to make sure we dealt with the insurance and that you were okay.”

“I could have done all that.”

“I know, but you’re also a bit inconvenienced with that cast.”

“At least it isn’t my dominant hand.”

“No, but texting is going to be interesting.”

She sighed. “I hadn’t thought about that.”

They were silent for a while. Jenna’s phone rang and she struggled to answer it, finally setting it down flat and swiping it on. It was Bree.

“MJ Kinney is Monteil Jamal Kinney. He lived at 7119 Elm Ct, apartment nine. There’s another person on the lease—a Janesse Jones. I have her phone number.”

“Better text it to me. Thanks, Bree. I think I’m just going to have a running tab with you.”

Bree’s catchy laugh sounded loudly. “We can do that. I’ve almost got it all worked out.”

Jenna’s phone beeped with the text from Bree containing the contact information for Miss Jones. She sighed and dialed the number, not sure what she was going to say.

“Hello?”

“Miss Jones? This is Jenna Rayne Hannigan.”

“What do you want?”

“I was in the car accident yesterday…”

“That was you? Get the fuck out of my life!”

The phone clicked and went dead. Jenna tried to think. What could she do to get MJ’s message across?

Leaning back, she sighed and looked over at Rob, who was waiting on another hold. He rolled his eyes and blew out a silent breath.

Another pull on her subconscious caused her to wince and she dropped down into the space between spaces. MJ stood there, reaching for her as though he was ready to be blown away.

“You need to go—find the light.”

Tell her I didn’t mean it.

“Didn’t mean what?”

What I said…

The recoil pulled Jenna back into herself and she closed her eyes against the wave of exhaustion spreading through her.
